Nalanda:-pride of india

Nalanda was an ancient Mahavihara, a revered Buddhist and Jainism monastery which also served as a renowned centre of learning, in the ancient kingdom of Magadha (modern-day Bihar) in India. The university of Nalanda obtained significant fame, prestige and relevance during ancient times, and rose to legendary status due to its contribution to the emergence of India as a great power around the fourth century.

Nalanda was considered as the world’s first university / gurukul.The site is located about 95 kilometres southeast of Patna near the city of Bihar and was one of the greatest centres of learning from the 5th century CE to 12th CE. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Archaeological evidence also notes contact with the Shailendra dynasty of Indonesia, one of whose kings built a monastery in the complex.

Nalanda was destoryed thrice but rebuild only twice

When  Muhammad bin Bakhtiyar Khilji attack Nalanda in 1198. It is believed that the library of Nalanda was so huge that it burned for months after the university was ransacked by Bakhtiyar Khilji and the library was set on fire.

It is believed that Buddhism are a major religion in India had a setback for hundreds of years due to the loss of the religious texts during the attack
