The Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Ranganatha, a form of the Supreme God, Maha Vishnu.Ranganathaswamy is the largest functioning hindu temple in the India and the world. The temple occupies an area of 155 acres with 81 shrines, 21 towers, 39 pavilions, and many water tanks.
There are 21 gopurams (tower gateways), among which the towering rajagoupram (shrine of the main gateway) is the tallest temple tower in Asia.
Facts about Sri ranganathaswamy temple
1) RAJAGOUPRAM
The main entrance, known as the Rajagopuram (the royal temple tower), goes up to 237 feet. It has a 13 tiers.gopuram’s base measures 166 feet by 97 feet
2) PILLARS OF TEMPLE
The hall of 1000 pillars has 953 pillars only .Inside the temple there is a hall having 953 pillars made of granite. The most intriguing, yet fascinating feature of the hall is the intricate sculptures. This hall was constructed by the Vijanagara rulers who ruled between 1336 and 1565.
3) PAINTING OF TEMPLE
painting was not done by oil colours but the walls of the Temple complex are painted with exquisite paintings using herbal and vegetable dyes. They speak volumes about the culture and tradition followed at those times.
4)UNESCO SITE
Sri ranganathaswamy temple is one of the unesco sites of india as it is an architectural beauty created at the time between 1336 to 1565.
5)WATER HARVESTING SYSTEM
The Temple complex has 2 large Temple tanks inside it, Chandra Pushkarini and Surya Pushkarini. The Complex has been built in a way that all the water collected flows into the tanks. The capacity of each Pushkarini is around 2 million litres and the water is cleansed by action of fishes in it.
6)SRI RAMANUJACHARYA SANNIDHI
He was a polymath(1017-1137 CE) of Srirangam who was instrumental of establishment of Sri Vaishnava sect in Srirangam as well as entire South India.He lived 120 yrs of which he has spent about 80 years in Sri Ranganathaswamy . Administration even today is laid by his guidance through the different scriptures, books he wrote. His mortal mummified body is still preserved in the shrine.
7)ATTACK
Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple has seen rampaging attacks from the Islamic armies and European conquerors. The temple was attack by Tipu Sultan , Alauddin Khilji and many other islamic and European conquerors. And it has to rebuild in 14th century.
I saw this beautiful temple on our India trip in March. I have much to envy about the strong spiritual atmosphere that these structures such as these provide for each town we visited. Namaste.
